Jump to RecipeI’m not a huge cocktail drinker, but every now and then I get a craving for a martini. My top picks? A Lemon Drop, a Cosmopolitan, or – when I’m in the mood for something fun – an Appletini.
The Book Behind the Bar
The recipe I use comes from a gem of a book: Drinkology: The Art and Science of the Cocktail.
A colleague gifted it to me years ago – her girlfriend was a bartender in New York and told her this was THE book tucked behind many bars. Apparently, it was the secret go-to whenever a mixologist needed a quick refresher.
And I get why. It’s not just recipes (though there are 370 pages of them). It’s also full of tricks of the trade, cocktail terminology, guides to which glass goes with which drink, and little nuggets of history about how certain cocktails came to be. It’s the kind of book that makes you feel like you actually know what you’re doing behind the bar.
Party Days and Shiny Bottles
My big party-hosting days are mostly behind me, but back when we used to throw big gatherings, that book was in constant rotation. The kitchen counter would be lined with shiny spirit bottles, and Drinkology was always open to something new. And you can definitely tell by the state of it. Dog-eared and stained, but still a trusty companion for any occasion.
These days, it doesn’t come off the shelf quite as often. But when it does, it’s usually for a funny little reason…
BBQ Sauce and Appletinis
One of my favourite BBQ sauce recipes (a story for another post) calls for apple juice. And wouldn’t you know it – the recipe always leaves just the right amount left in the carton for a couple of Appletinis.
Coincidence? Maybe. But I like to think the universe just wants me to enjoy a martini every now and again.
What’s Your Go-To?
So, tell me – what’s your favourite cocktail? Something classic, something fruity, or maybe a hidden gem you’ve discovered? I’d love to hear your picks and maybe even add a few to my next martini experiment!
